I was copying some photos from my wife’s Fuji camera when the photos disappeared from view – obviously not something I caused!
Anyway after the initial panic I found PhotoRec which can be downloaded from the CG security website or can be installed on Ubuntu using Synaptic (package name is testdisk). I was hoping for something with a friendly GUI but PhotoRec is command-line driven, very easy to use and does exactly what it says on the tin. After running PhotoRec:
sudo photorec
I was asked a few questions about my disk. I chose the XD camera card (/dev/sdh) plugged in via usb and choose Intel and FAT when asked about the partition type. After a few short questions photorec went to work and 15 minutes later I was browsing the recovered photos.
Time to ditch the flakely disk but very happy with PhotoRec.
